Best Practices for Programming

Battery must be in good condition and fully charged
All Ignition Keys present when programming (Some Vehicles), ask if this applies.
Adequate work area where the doors and hood can be opened (out of direct sunlight if possible)
Keep the Old Module until the vehicle is running with the new module.
Leave the Old Module installed until the new module is ready to be installed and programmed. (Ford Only)
Is there scan tool communication with the old module and new module?
The reason the module is being replaced or updated? Recurring codes? TSB? No Start?
The replacement module is new? reman? used?
Where was the replacement module purchased? dealer? aftermarket?
Did the engine run with the old module?
